OUR MISSION

The Washington Heights Choir School builds community and self-confidence among elementary school-age students in Washington Heights through ensemble singing, vocal and instrumental instruction, and musical exploration in a tuition-free, safe, excellent, and affirming after-school setting.

OUR TEAM

Our talented and dedicated faculty and staff are experienced performers, creators, and music educators. They have been part of the WHCS family for many years and they teach in English and Spanish.

OUR PARTNERS

Washington Heights Choir School extends our deepest thanks to our partners, grantors, and supporters, who help us continue to provide our services to the Washington Heights community free of charge. Your contribution in any amount can make a real difference.

WHCS is a free after-school music program based at Holyrood Church on 179th St. and Fort Washington Avenue. Our program runs five days a week, from 3:30pm to 6pm, and we offer instruction mainly in vocal, but also in instrumental music. The choir has frequent performance opportunities around New York City.

OUR PROGRAM

  • Music

Our students learn piano, vocal technique, music theory, dance, and of course to sing together in a choir.

  • Activities

We pick-up the students from several schools in the area, build in homework assistance each program day, and provide snacks.

  • Calendar

The program begins in September and ends in June, closely following the NYC Department of Education’s calendar.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

Our program is open to students in grades 1 - 5 after an evaluation to assess whether or not the program is a good fit. Elements assessed include basic rhythm patterns, ability to hear pitch and simple pitch patterns, and ability to take direction. When making our decision, we take maturity (particularly for younger students), ability to focus, and natural musical ability under serious consideration.

We require that new students attend at least three days a week, though we prefer attendance all five days. It's important to reiterate that our program is primarily a vocal music program, so students will spend most of their time developing music skills.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Evaluations are held at the beginning of each semester. If you have more than one child who is interested in attending, make sure you register each child separately.
